VoxelSensors represents Brussels deep tech as founding member of new European Partnership for Virtual Worlds
Brussels, Belgium – 30 December 2025 – VoxelSensors is proud to announce its position as both a founding member and board member of the newly formed European Partnership for Virtual Worlds. Representing the Brussels deep tech ecosystem, VoxelSensors joins an alliance of industry leaders, academia, and research organizations dedicated to advancing European technological sovereignty.
Launched on December 10, 2025, via a Memorandum of Understanding between the European Commission and the Virtual Worlds Association (VWA), this partnership represents a significant commitment to the future of Extended Reality (XR). With €400 million invested, the collaboration aims to build a human-centric, sustainable, and competitive digital ecosystem in Europe.
As a founding member and board member, VoxelSensors brings its expertise in Single Photon Active Event Sensor (SPAES™) technology and Perception-as-a-Service solutions to help shape the strategic direction of Europe’s virtual worlds initiative.
A Distinctly European Approach to the Virtual Worlds
As VoxelSensors’ representative on the VWA Board, Ruben Lieten, VoxelSensors COO, stated: “I’m excited to help shape the future of virtual worlds with a distinctly European approach — one that prioritizes consumer privacy, interoperability, and ethical innovation. This partnership positions Europe’s deep tech ecosystem, including startups from the Brussels Region, at the forefront of next-generation XR technologies while ensuring these advances directly benefit EU citizens and industries.”
Why This Partnership is Vital
The partnership focuses on two key pillars: protecting the consumer and strengthening the economy.
For EU Consumers:
- Ethical & Human-Centric: ensuring accessible, inclusive technology that respects fundamental EU values.
- Privacy & Security: Guaranteeing compliance with GDPR and AI digital rights to strictly protect user data.
- Better Services: Driving tangible innovation in healthcare, education, and cultural sectors.
- Interoperability: Preventing “vendor lock-in” by promoting open systems that work together seamlessly.
For the European Economy:
- Competitiveness: Strengthening technological sovereignty and retaining high-value industries within Europe.
- Job Creation: The sector is projected to support approximately 860,000 new jobs in XR and development by the end of 2026.
- R&D Efficiency: Accelerating the transfer of world-class research directly to commercial applications.
- Sustainability: Enabling industries (e.g., automotive) to utilize digital simulation for cost-effective, greener operations.
